Without the addition of additives, neither oils nor fuels can develop their full performance. For this reason, some of them are already added in the refineries, e.g. to fuels and engine oils. In the case of diesel fuel, additives ensure that minus temperatures no longer affect it. In petrol, on the other hand, fuel additives are added to increase anti-knock properties. Even if the average motorist does not notice much of these additives in everyday use, they are essential substances that are indispensable. In addition to the industrial additives for the car, there are also some that can be purchased in normal shops. These serve as additional protection or are special cleaners that supplement the industrial additives and thus further reduce wear. The best known of these additives is AdBlue, a fuel additive developed for diesel engines.
The aims of the additives are a cleaning effect and protection against wear and tear as well as the care of mechanical components. The corrosion protection brought about serves to improve quality and can also provide an increase in performance, as the friction of rough surfaces is minimised. The advantages of additives in the car will be directly perceived by the driver. Directly noticeable is an optimisation of the processes in the engine, which can lead to a reduction in fuel consumption and in some cases to lower CO2 emissions. Since the fuel, radiator and oil system is protected against premature corrosion, the substances also directly secure important wear parts and thus protect against premature cost-intensive repairs.
Modern vehicles are dependent on the additives. Without them, neither the engine nor the engine oils would provide the required performance. If fuel were to be filled up without additives, the engine would hardly move at all. Similarly, engine oil without additives would not be able to withstand the stresses and strains of modern engines and would instead gradually destroy them. For this reason, the use of additives is essential for newer vehicles.
The composition of these additives is such that they directly dissolve all undesirable substances or expel them from the fuel tract. Diverse additives in the additives provide long-lasting protection against new deposits of harmful substances. In times of climate protection, it is also a useful side effect that the emission of hydrocarbons (HC) can be reduced by fuel additives. The use of fuel additives, such as lead replacement, is highly recommended, especially for low-drive vehicles and vintage cars.
In order to make the most of the effects, it is essential to use the correct type of fuel. There are fuel additives for diesel and petrol engines as well as for gas-powered vehicles. These must not be mixed or interchanged. Many fuel additives are already contained in the fuel we fill up. However, some additives should be purchased in addition in the trade to upgrade the fuel and optimise performance. In the case of petrol, for example, these are the lead substitute additives, in gas engines the Saver Fluids and in diesel vehicles the AdBlue.
To ensure that the prescribed pollutant limits are not exceeded, most vehicles cannot be switched on when the minimum fill level limit is reached. It is therefore always advisable to check the fill level early and regularly. The refilling process is not very complicated and in most cases you can do it yourself. You can find more detailed information on this in the operating instructions for your car. Since AdBlue crystallizes quickly, you should be careful when handling it. If some liquid does overflow, remove the residue immediately with plenty of water.
Under no circumstances should the mixture be poured directly into the tank! The consequences here are similar to filling petrol in a diesel engine. As AdBlue has a higher density than diesel or petrol, it settles in the lower part of the fuel tank. From there it gets into the injection system, where rust is formed immediately. This rust then destroys the nozzles and the pump. For this reason there is a separate tank for AdBlue. Usually it is located next to the diesel tank and is filled separately.
For older vehicles and vintage cars, however, lead replacement as a fuel additive for petrol engines is highly advisable. These cars were originally designed for leaded fuel, which has been banned since the early nineties. The fuel additive ensures that the old engines can process normal lead-free petrol (Super 95) better and that the valves are not attacked so quickly.
It is no secret that additives are added to all mineral and synthetic oils already in the refineries.
For these reasons, sufficient attention should be paid to care and maintenance. On this occasion, it is advisable to replenish the motor oil additives and transmission oil additives as well. Care must be taken here that the amount added does not lead to the maximum amount being exceeded.

Motor cleaners are used in the context of motor flushing. Radiator cleaner and radiator sealant are added directly to the cooling water. The latter seals smaller leaks, thus eliminating the need for time-consuming searches for the leaks. When the coolant is changed, the loosened deposits are then disposed of at the same time. In this way, the cooling effect can be significantly increased again. The other additives are either used during inspections (e.g. throttle valve cleaner and intake system cleaner) or added during the filling process (e.g. injection cleaner and catalyst cleaner).
