What types of window cleaners are there?
First of all, a distinction is made between windshield cleaners that should be used either in summer or in winter. The big difference here lies in the freezing points and the cleaning requirements. While in the summer months insects, tar residues and tree resin are to be removed increasingly, in the winter one relies on a strong disk frost protection by application of alcohols such as ethanol and glycols. In addition, greasy salt residues on the windows make life difficult for us. The manufacturer Alpine also offers in its range a so-called "all-season cleaner", which covers all the cleaning properties of the variants just mentioned in one.
Window cleaner concentrate or would you rather use a ready-mix?
Opinions are divided on this question. One would rather have it comfortable for cleaning car windows and reaches in winter for the ready-to-use mixture of windscreen antifreeze, which often cope with temperatures down to -20°C. For the summer, mixtures are provided with enough insect remover, so that a clear view is guaranteed in any case.
The other side prefers to mix their own windshield wiper water and thus swears by concentrates. Here you can determine the minus temperature limit yourself in winter with the windshield antifreeze. Increase the amount of concentrate, the liquid withstands, for example, up to -60 ° C without attacking the rubber parts, paint, plastics and headlights.
The usual mixing ratio of the usually somewhat more expensive summer concentrates is 1:100. Say one part concentrate you mix with 100 parts water. In most cases, this results in up to 50l of windshield wiper water. Here, well-known manufacturers such as Sonax, Dr. Wack or Alpine offer bottles with 250ml concentrates.
By the way, windshield cleaner concentrates should never be filled purely into the wash container, since no optimal cleaning performance can be achieved in this way. This also applies to the winter concentrates with windscreen antifreeze.
What do I have to consider when refilling or changing? Can I mix summer/winter wiping water?
If the wipe water indicator light in your car flashes or no more wipe water comes out of the nozzles, it is high time to refill. Simply fill your desired liquid in the designated container in the engine compartment and you can again as usual, clean the car windows.
The change from a winter to summer cleaner is very simple, because the wiper fluid container does not necessarily have to be empty for this. The new summer cleaner simply mixes with the winter fluid when it is first filled. In the fall, however, when the outside temperatures drop, caution is advised. Here, the residual liquid from the summer dilutes the new winter wiping water and falsifies the values from the windshield antifreeze, as they are indicated on the packaging.
Thus, the "summer-winter wiping water mixture" could expand by freezing in the lines and cause damage. Therefore, buy windshield wiper water in time that contains windshield antifreeze, so that the summer wiper water is gone from the lines before the first frost.
For the mixing ratios, you should always follow the manufacturer's packaging instructions. Depending on where you live, there are different weather conditions and temperatures. On average, it can be said that a winter windshield cleaner with a temperature resistance of up to -30 ° C is quite sufficient throughout Germany.
From a use of windshield cleaners with windshield antifreeze in the warm months experts strongly advise against, because the contained alcohols damage the wipers, as well as other plastic parts and the paint by the heat very. In addition, these windshield cleaners are not designed to clean up insect remains, pollen or tree sap. An exception is the already mentioned all-season cleaner.
How do I prepare my car for optimal windshield cleaning?
The windscreen cleaners only achieve optimum cleaning performance if a certain amount of preparation has been carried out. It is important that you should remove very coarse dirt or icing by hand beforehand. Likewise, the right and fitting windshield wipers play a major role. The rubber should be supple so that the cleaner together with the wipers can effectively clean the car windows.
Furthermore, the windshield wiper cleaning nozzles must be properly and professionally adjusted so that the windshield cleaner can be sprayed completely and extensively on the windshield letters. Please make sure that the nozzles are not dirty, clogged or iced up. If the nozzles are too dirty or aim too high or too low, they can be carefully cleaned and readjusted with a fine needle.
