Car registration online from 1st October 2019!

The registration of a new car has always been associated with a lot of time and racing. Especially in bigger cities you could spend several hours waiting in the car registration office. That is now passé from 1st October 2019. The Federal Ministry of Transport will then start with the 3rd stage of online registration. This will make it possible not only to deregister the car online, but also to register and re-register the car online. The following text presents the new features and shows how you can register your car online.

What steps does the introduction of online approval involve and what are the requirements?

To date, 2 of the 4 stages of online approval are already active, the third is in the starting blocks and the 4th is planned for the coming years. The levels include the following functions:

1. Unsubscribe car online (active since January 2015)
2. Recertification of the vehicle to the same holder with the same registration number (active since October 2017)
3. Register your car online and re-register your car online, take your license plate with you when you change your owner, change your address (start 1st October 2019)
4. Car registration online also for companies / enterprises / major customers (start soon)

The vehicle registration online is only valid for vehicles registered after 1st January 2015. This includes cars, motorcycles and trailers. Only then will there be the new vehicle registration documents (registration certificates Part 1), the new vehicle registration documents (registration certificate Part 2) and vehicle registration plates, each of which contains a security code. With the registration certificate part 1, the security code is on the back for scratching. With the KFZ-Kennzeichen there is a stamp badge of the respective federal state, which can be scratched if necessary also more freely.

In addition, the new identity card in credit card format is required, which has been available since 1st November 2010. These identity cards already contain an online function that can be activated with an eID pin. The online function can be recognised by the picture mark shown on the right. This can be found on the back of the identity card on the right. There are two ways in which you can use the online ID function. On the one hand you can purchase a reader (starts already from 10,00€) or you can use the free AusweisApp2, which is provided by the federal government.

How does the car registration work online?

To register your car online, the following documents are required:

• Approval Certificate Part I
• If applicable, EEC conformity certificate (declares the EU standard and the EC types approval for the vehicle)
• Confirmation of insurance (dual card/eVB)
  For season admission insurance double card for season license plate
• Valid identity card of the future vehicle owner with online function

The following additional documents are required for a used car purchased in Germany:

• Approval Certificate Part I
• With deregistered vehicle: deregistration or decommissioning certificate
• Proof of valid main and exhaust emission inspection, if the vehicle is older than 3 years.

The online approval procedure is carried out as follows:

1. Call up the website of the competent licensing authority
2. Login with the online badge and verify with the eID-Pin
3. Rub off the security code on the registration certificate Part 1
4. Insert vehicle data into the form (e.g. vehicle identification number, HU data, eVB number, account data of the new holder)
5. Select license plate or enter a previously reserved license plate
6. Exit application and pay fee

The data is checked by the registration office and you will then receive the current registration certificates and the stamp plaques for the licence plate by post. The processing time is approx. 2-3 working days. You can also conveniently order your desired licence plates online.

Car re-registration online will also be possible from October 1, 2019. Up to now it has only been possible within the jurisdiction of the same registration office. From October 2019 it will also be possible throughout Germany and will include a change of owner.

How to unsubscribe your car online?

1. Call up the website of the competent licensing authority
2. Login with the online badge and verify with the eID-Pin
3. Rub off the security code on the registration certificate part 1 and the security code on the label
4. Insert vehicle data into the form (e.g. vehicle identification number, account data of the current holder)
5. Indicator now invalid
6. Exit application and pay fee

notice will be sent within a few days by post.

How to re-register the vehicle online?

1. Call up the website of the competent licensing authority
2. Login with the online badge and verify with the eID-Pin
3. The scratched-off security code on the registration certificate part 1 of the deregistration
4. Insert vehicle data into the form (e.g. vehicle identification number, HU data, eVB number, account data of the holder)
5. Select or reserve the same license plate
6. Exit application and pay fee

notice, new registration certificate part 1 and new sticker holders for the license plate will be sent by post within a few days.

With the 3rd stage of car registration online, there is hardly any need to go to the registration office. The advantages are therefore obvious:

• performable at any time
• No unnecessary waiting times at the licensing authority
• Online approval can be carried out anywhere
• You can immediately start printing the registration certificates
• The authorities are relieved
