Basically, there are two types of water pumps:
Water pumps, which are driven mechanically, are moved by the V-belt or toothed belt. Their speed is dependent on the engine speed, as the belts are driven by this.
If the coolant pumps are driven electrically, the speed is based on the cooling requirements. They are controlled independently of the engine speed. This means that they are more efficient and can even reduce fuel consumption.
It is also possible for an electrically driven auxiliary water pump to be installed in addition to the conventional mechanical cooling water pump. In extreme situations, the auxiliary water pump supports the actual water pump if it cannot provide enough power. It is therefore only switched on temporarily. The auxiliary water pump can be helpful in long traffic jams, for example, if not enough air can be drawn in to cool the vehicle while it is stationary and the temperature has to be regulated exclusively by the water pump.
Water pumps in cars are exposed to high thermal and mechanical loads. Deposits in the cooling water can thus cause damage to the water pump. Likewise, the water pump wheel also wears out due to friction from the belt drive.
Typical symptoms of a defective water pump are leaks. This means that coolant is leaking out. Thus, a sinking coolant and an accompanying increase in engine temperature is a sign of a possibly defective water pump in the car. However, these signs can also indicate a defective cylinder head gasket or damaged idler pulleys. Grinding or hammering noises can also be an indication of a broken cooling water pump, as can the failure of the heater. In any case, a workshop should be visited as soon as possible to check the components in more detail. Only in this way can engine damage be avoided, which would cause high follow-up costs.
In principle, there is also a maintenance interval for mechanical water pumps in the car, which usually goes hand in hand with the replacement of the V-belt or timing belt. The exact interval for your vehicle can be found in your car's documentation.
Since the water pump change is mostly very fiddly, since the belt drive must be removed with and thus some working hours accrue, the belt drive, thermostat, gasket and if necessary also the cylinder head gasket is always replaced in the same context. Similarly, the water pump change is also carried out when actually only the belt drive or the cylinder head gasket would have to be changed. Apart from the high amount of work, it makes sense to change all the components involved at the same time that the new spare parts are not prematurely closed by partially worn parts. The individual parts themselves are inexpensive to purchase. Only the high labor costs of the workshop have an impact here, since installation and removal are very time-consuming and thus do not have to be carried out several times.
Changing the water pumps of electrically operated coolant pumps is less time-consuming, as these are not connected to a belt drive. This means that the belt drive does not need to be removed, which significantly reduces the working time.
If you want to buy a water pump, you should first start by entering the vehicle so that only matching items are displayed. Alternatively, the part number of the coolant pump can also be entered in the search field. In addition, it should be clarified in advance whether other spare parts are to be changed at the same time. In this case, our individually created product packages are a good choice. For the most part, these contain not only the cooling water pump but also the corresponding belt. Likewise, there are packages with the combination of water pump and thermostat. In some cases, the coolant temperature sensor or the specified amount of coolant is also included in the packages.
When buying water pumps, it is generally not necessary to get the original parts of the vehicle manufacturer. Instead, you can rely on brand manufacturers who offer the coolant pumps in comparable quality but at a much lower price. The following brand manufacturers, among others, we have for you in the range for coolant pumps:
In addition to the spare parts and the required amount of coolant, it is recommended to purchase a cooler cleaner when buying water pumps. This is added to the old coolant before draining and left to act for up to 30 min with the engine switched on and the heater running. This causes all dirt and debris to be removed from the cooling system. Thus, the life of the components is increased and the wear is delayed.
