In principle, it is permitted to install up to two additional brake lights in vehicles in addition to the two standard brake lights. If it is only a 3rd brake light, it is to be mounted centrally at the rear clearly above the other brake lights. If it is a pair of additional brake lights, they must be mounted on the left and right with a distance of at least 1m to the road. If there is already an additional pair of brake lights, it is not permitted to retrofit a third (or fifth) brake light.
A 3rd brake light always needs a test number or approval from the TÜV within the European Community. After installation, the additional brake light must be accepted by the TÜV without exception. Without the release, the third brake light has no road approval.
Additional brake lights with LEDs are popular because they shine brighter. However, not every one of them has a European test number. Therefore, when buying a 3rd brake light with LED, pay close attention to whether they are approved for the European market. Here in Germany, the third brake light is even TÜV-relevant and can lead to failure of the main inspection if installed incorrectly or if a test number is not available.
On auxiliary brake lights from brand manufacturers, the test number is indicated directly. The large E followed by a number indicates that it is approved for the EU and in which country the approval was made. A 3rd brake light with a valid test number can be replaced or retrofitted without hesitation.
We mainly carry additional brake lights from TYC. It is one of the leading brands for car lamps with a high demand for quality and design. Many car manufacturers also fall back on this brand as an original equipment manufacturer and install their lamps directly from the factory. For this reason, our offers always include the original part numbers of the vehicle manufacturer. So it is easy to check whether the respective 3rd brake light is suitable for your vehicle. It is even easier if you select your vehicle in the upper section. Then the results are reduced directly to those that fit your car. If you have any questions about the third brake light or if you are unsure which one fits your vehicle, please contact our customer service with your chassis number.
