What to consider when buying hubcaps?

Hubcaps differ above all in their diameter, which is specified in inches, for example hubcap 15 inches. The diameter is the same as the rim diameter. This specification can be found directly on the rim. In addition to hubcaps 15 inches, other common sizes are 13, 14 and 16 inches.

What should be considered when mounting hubcaps?

Once the right wheel trims have been found, it's time to install the hubcaps. The first step is to remove the old covers. These are usually clamped to the rims via a clamping ring with barbs. More rarely, screws are used. Once the ring is clamped, it can be pulled off. Partly it can be a bit cumbersome, because of dirt the ring sits a bit tighter. Therefore, work gloves are also recommended to mount hubcaps, because the dirt is, among other things, brake dust and can be washed off only poorly. In order not to damage the wheel trim, you should go from the valve to the middle of the tire and grab a spoke there to the left and right of it and pull. If it does not come off, the next step should be to try to move the hubcap, otherwise it can be carefully pried from the rim with a screwdriver.

If the old hubcaps are off, the rims should be cleaned and then the new ones come on. For wheel trims with a clamping ring, the installation is quite simple. If you look from the front on the wheel trim, you can see a recess in the outer area. This recess is placed on the tire valve. The valve must remain free, otherwise the hubcap must be removed every time you want to check the tire pressure. Once the start is correctly positioned, the rest of the wheel cover can be pressed against the rim. When it has snapped into place everywhere, perform a short jolt test to see whether it is also firmly seated.

Sometimes it can happen that the rims and the hubcaps do not fit 100% and it is either too tight or too loose. For this purpose, the tension ring has a bulge at one point. This can now either be carefully pressed a little flatter with a pair of pliers, so that the clamping ring becomes a little larger or from the sides is compressed a little, so that the ring becomes a little smaller. In this way, the hubcap can be made to fit the rim. However, this does not mean that you can get a hubcap 15 inch to fit a 14 or 16 inch rim. The margin is only small.

Incidentally, it is worth regularly checking the wheel trims to see if they still fit correctly. Because loose-fitting wheel trims can come off at high speeds and hit your own car or other road users. If one does get lost, you can also buy individual hubcaps from us.
