How can the EGR valve go defective and what are the symptoms of this?

The EGR valve is one of the most important components of external exhaust gas recirculation. In external exhaust gas recirculation, an EGR pipe leads from the engine outlet back to the intake tract. In addition to the EGR valve, the EGR pipe often also contains an AGR cooler. The EGR cooler reduces the exhaust gas temperature even further, so that the temperature in the combustion chamber is also reduced even further, and with it the nitrogen oxide content.

Only if the exhaust gas recirculation valve functions correctly can the recirculated exhaust gas quantity be precisely metered. However, since it is located directly in the exhaust gas flow, it is exposed to constant high thermal loads. Even in combination with an EGR cooler, the temperatures of the exhaust gases are still very high or there are additional high temperature differences. These stress the material and can lead to wear. Deposits also stress the material and can clog the EGR valve. Most of the deposits are soot particles contained in the exhaust gases. But oil residues due to a defective cylinder head gasket can also cause an EGR valve to become defective. The deposits coke together with the valve due to the high temperatures and become very encrusted over time. This means that the exhaust gas recirculation valve can no longer open as well or close sufficiently. As a result, the exhaust gas recirculation system can no longer function adequately. This then also affects the main inspection, as the increased exhaust gas values represent a significant defect.

If an EGR valve is defective, the following signs may indicate this:

The engine jerks when you step on the gas
There is fluctuation at idle
The engine warning light flashes
There is a sudden loss of engine power
Fuel consumption increases
Black clouds of exhaust gas are emitted

In the worst case, even the emergency program switches on and the car can only be driven with throttled performance.

In many cases, it would be enough to clean the EGR valve, but this requires several hours of work, as stubborn deposits can only be removed if the EGR valve has been removed. Only after installation can you tell whether the EGR valve is working properly again. If it does not, it must be replaced and thus requires twice the amount of work. For this reason, experts recommend not cleaning a defective EGR valve, but replacing it directly. The effort is due to the fact that many components must first be removed from the engine in order to reach the EGR valve. Preventively, however, it can be worthwhile to clean the EGR valve regularly. For this purpose, there are so-called AGR valve cleaners. These are sprayed into the engine's intake tract, where they loosen lighter contaminants. This can significantly extend the life of the EGR valve.

What to consider when buying an EGR valve?

To buy an EGR valve is important to clarify in advance what components are needed. Are seals and / or the EGR pipe also needed or is it a combined device consisting of the exhaust gas recirculation module and the EGR cooler? Since the EGR valve differs for each vehicle, it makes sense to first select the vehicle to reduce the range to only suitable items.
