A tire repair kit mainly consists of a tire sealant and a compressor. Another option is a ready-mix in a spray can, for example the "Auto-Reifenfix" from SONAX. Both replace the classic spare tire, which can hardly be found in vehicles anymore. The task of a tire repair kit is to make a defective tire roadworthy again as quickly as possible without having to go to great lengths. In contrast to a conventional tire change, this variant is very time-saving and simple. No specialist knowledge is required, as the instructions included with the tire repair kits are self-explanatory. This solution also eliminates the need to transport spare tires in the trunk, which in turn saves space and weight.
With a tire repair kit as a compressor variant, a special tire sealant in the form of a rubber solution is blown into the tire via the valve with the help of a compressor. You simply connect the power cable for the compressor to the cigarette lighter of your car with the ignition switched on. The solution spreads inside the tire and seals small holes and cracks while the compressor inflates the tire again. Thus, a continuation of the journey is possible again within a few minutes. In the second variant with the tire repair kit in the form of a spray can you act similarly, except that here you do not need electricity. It is imperative that you follow the manufacturer's instructions for all sets.
Please note that such tire repair kits seal only small damage with a diameter of up to 6 mm. If in doubt, call the roadside assistance service for large damage. After applying a tire repair kit, it is possible to continue driving up to 3 days or a distance of 160 km. Be sure to keep a speed limit of 80 km/h. Visit a garage as soon as possible to repair the damage. If you have a tire pressure monitoring sensor installed in your car, this will not affect it. In addition, the rubber solution is not dangerous, flammable or corrosive. The sealant included in the kit has a shelf life of up to four years.
It is not an offence not to carry a tire repair kit. However, it is strongly recommended as it can save you a lot of trouble. What is required by law, however, is to carry a first aid kit.
It is mandatory to have a First Aid Kit (Standard DIN 13164) which has not yet reached the expiration date, in the car at all times. In addition, a high-visibility vest (Standard EN20471), and a warning triangle must be present in the car. These parts are particularly important and can save lives in an emergency. In our store you can buy high visibility vests, warning triangles and first aid kits individually or as a set and even with an additional fire extinguisher. Pay attention to the durability of your first aid kit and refill or replace it after an emergency.
If you discover an expired first-aid kit in your car, don't throw it away, but rather donate it to aid organizations such as the "Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK)" or the "Malteser". These organizations like to use expired first-aid kits for training purposes or practice missions.
Anyone who cannot show a warning triangle or first aid kit at a vehicle inspection must expect a warning fine of 15 euros. So take precautions here as well. In the event of a breakdown, the warning triangle must be set up at least 50 meters from the scene of the accident in built-up areas. Out of town, at higher speeds, it is even 100 meters and on the highway 150 meters.
It is best to store your high-visibility vest within easy reach at the front of the car. Should an emergency occur, put on the high-visibility vest before you leave the car. Only one high-visibility vest is required by law, but it is advisable to have the appropriate number of high-visibility vests in the car for the other passengers as well. This makes everyone easier to see should they have to leave the vehicle together in the event of a breakdown.
We also recommend that you carry a tow rope or tow bar, emergency hammer and a starter spray or jumper cable, that can help you jump start a weak battery. You can also find these products in our store.
It is important to carry a first aid kit and a tire repair kit with you on every car trip. No one can predict what can happen during a car ride. All the more precautionary we must act to be best prepared in case of emergency.
